Appelberg and Thomsen secured Formula GT Challenge titles
Sunshine, packed grandstands and a lively paddock provided the perfect setting for the Formula GT Challenge season finale, which took place last weekend as part of the traditional Finaleweekend at FDM Jyllandsringen. Following a season featuring rounds in Denmark, Norway and Sweden, the champions were finally to be decided in the fifth and final round – and impressively, both titles went down to the third and final race of the weekend.
In the overall Trofeo Pirelli standings, three cars remained in contention for the title heading into the final round of the season. However, the ultimate showdown came down to defending 2025 champion Andreas Borris of Denmark and Sweden’s Christian Appelberg, who finished the final race of the season first and second respectively, separated by just 0.6 seconds.
Borris’ victory, however, was not enough to defend his title. By finishing second, Appelberg secured the points he needed and, with a margin of just two points, could take his place on the top step of the 2026 championship podium and celebrate becoming the new Formula GT Challenge champion. Andreas Borris secured a well-deserved second place in the championship, while Christian Nielsen and Frederik Nielsen, who shared a car during the 2026 season, claimed third place together.
Coppa Formula decided at the finish line
The Coppa Formula championship also went down to the very last race of the season. Christian Crone arrived at FDM Jyllandsringen as the championship leader, but the title fight took a dramatic turn in the second race of the weekend when the young Dane was forced to retire and left the race without scoring any points. As a result, Crone suddenly found himself one point behind rival Ulrich Thomsen heading into the third and final race. The equation was simple: Crone needed to finish ahead of Thomsen to claim the 2026 championship.
The outcome could hardly have been closer. Ulrich Thomsen secured his third victory of the weekend, and although Crone crossed the finish line in second place less than a second later, Thomsen had secured the points he needed to be crowned the 2026 Coppa Formula champion. Crone finished the season in second place, just four points behind the title winner, while Maciej Walenda was awarded the trophy for third place in the championship.
“It was a fantastic conclusion to a very successful season. We have raced in all three Scandinavian countries with strong grids and plenty of close but fair racing, and to finish with a finale weekend where so many drivers were still in contention for the titles provided exactly the excitement and entertainment we had hoped for,” says Chresten Hansen, Race Promoter at Formula Automobile.
“A big thank you goes to all our drivers and teams, and not least to the many spectators who have been in the grandstands cheering throughout the season. With the 2026 season now completed, we look forward to presenting our ambitions for the 2027 edition of Formula GT Challenge,” he adds.
